for tomorrow night's debate at an event earlier today in charlotte, north carolina, wolf, biden said how can the romney campaign justify raising taxes on the middle class that has been buried -- in his words, buried, the last four years. paul ryan at a campaign event in iowa just a few moments ago seized on those comments and said vice president biden said that the middle class has been buried. we agree. he goes onto say that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states, wolf. i have a strg sense this will be brought up at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about the romney campaign's people who are coming in? >> reporter: wolf, it's probably no surprise rob portman, mitt romney's chief sparring partner playing barack obama
hillary and biden back in the day. it's no drama obama. that's what you've got. he's a great speaker. great orator but there's no passion when he's debating. he gives you the numbers. tells you what he thinks. if we're going to decide the next president on debating skills and style, then we're all in a lot of trouble. >> i'm going do disagree with you, shockingly. >> shocking. >> i'm just going to laugh. >> ross just laughs. we have seen president obama on the campaign trail when he was campaigning against hillary really litigate his point, really make it strongly drive it home. you saw none of that last night. you saw him sort of going along with mitt romney's numbers and realizing he wasn't prepared enough. so i think you're going to have to see a real shift in how he approaches the next debate and that's why he's on the trail today. he's mad. it's like he's got his game face on. >> you have a president who sort of stood there debating a guy who has not been on the campaign trail for the last six months. that mitt romney and those positions were brand new. made up out of thin air.

than joe biden paul ryan and the republican party in general. it is well known romney's favorability numbers are lower than the president's many believe romney, mega-rich businessman, who once tied the family dog to the roof of his car, doesn't seem able to connect with a lot of ordinary voters out will but less popular than george w. bush, that's cold. for start i, romney and his campaign have done everything in their power to make americans forget about george w. bush in his eight years as president. romney avoids mentioning the form president's name. bush was nowhere to be seen at the republican convention in tampa. that's because for a lot of americans, bush's presidency brings back bad memories of the war in iraq, afghanistan, and the dismal response to the federal government to hurricane katrina, and the conditions that allowed the financial crisis of 2008 to happen, on and on. it is a long list. a few months ago, a cnn poll found bush is the least popular living ex-president. somehow he still gets better favorable ratings than the republican that wants to be our next president
